eBay auction, 'Beyer lace knitting 30 patterns Herbert Niebling 1950'
AKA, Kunst Stricken, Große und Kleine Decken 2004 edition.

Recently, this item went for US$81 on eBay, however, it can be bought brand new from German vendors for 12.90 Euros, (about US$20.)

Inside this folder is a black-and-white glossy page booklet of designs and several worksheets for the corresponding charts. Charts for 2 designs are not included in the folder, but can be obtained through the publisher.

OTN, another go at a diy 'Lyra,' combined charts from Federdolde and Orchidee/Alpenrose.
- 3 mm circs
- ColourMart 55/35/10 merino/viscose/cashmere
- added length to some diagonal lines, not as many as previous FO's which lay flat, but ended up with largish holes.

- 32"/80 cm 3.0 mm Addi Lace circular and Addi Turbo
- on Rnd 92
- 150 g cone of Colourmart merino/viscose/cashmere, ruby colour
- added extra mesh rpts from Rnd 81 (to Rnd 100)

Federdolde WIP setback

- currently, on round 153 of 194.

[1st photo] at round 173 and





[2nd photo] frogged back to round 141.

- last Friday I decided to frog back 30+ rounds, (over 20.000 sts!) as the corners were too narrow, not quite 2 full rpts of corner leaves; no lifeline - took 1 1/2 hours to pick up sts again, still, not too bad with this thread-needle combination.

- Book 1 has the octagonal version of this pattern, square version might be in Bk 2?
(Edit Jan 9: there's also a smaller round version of this design, #3, pg 4)

- the chart in Book 1 is for an octagonal version, however I am going to try and make a square version by repeating the leaves pattern in the corners - don't know if this will work or not.

- I have another variation of this pattern, as well, Burda Special Strickspitze E418 23, which has 4 repeats of the motif, but a different filler stitch. Burda gives credit to Niebling in this issue, but does not name the pattern, just Viereckdecke, (square doily,)

- US 000, 1.5 mm Addi Turbo circulars
- Dec 12 - swatching
- Dec 17 - Louet Euroflax Venice, frogged this/1st attempt, (from - The Beehive Yarn & Needlecraft in Calgary, Alberta.) The 1 ply Euroflax has thick and thin spots; splits occasionally; softer and more difficult for me to knit with than crisp, tightly twisted crochet cotton.
- Jan 05,'08; frogged the center of Federdolde
- Restarted Mar 08 using a thinner, plied linen thread, (both the 1 ply and 2 ply twist so I give the thread a 'twirl' every so often- maybe every 30 or 40 sts.) The 70/2 is spun so tightly I can't even see that it's plied - much easier to knit with than the 14/1.

Feathered Border notes, lace sampler

started with 1.5 mm circs., edging from back issue of Anna, Burda

Heirloom Knitting (2004 edition), Feathered Border. Feb 25/08,

Chart 2, (over 78 st pattern rpt on 2.5 mm circs,) changes;

Row 87 & 88 - center 2 ‘dots’ = 2 (or k2); (ie do not inc again, followup of the dbl-dot-inc in Row 86)
Row 92 - add a YO (inc) after (to the right of) center \ (dec);
Row 129 - add a YO (inc) before (to the right of) center \ (dec).

Chart 3 changes;

Row 141 - at the 3 diamond shapes, used \o..o/ for o…o ie add decs on each side of this sequence;
Row 149 - changed stitch count 11 to 10 and added a / (k2tog dec) along the right edge of the large diamond shape;
Rows 158-162 left of the V-shape there’s a cluster of stitch numbers that are short 1 st each, ie where the st counts are 8,6,6,5,5 I used 9,7,7,6,6 stitches respectively; (2.0 mm circs from Row 174 to end.)

33 1/2" blocked.

There's no designer mentioned in either issue below.

- 80 cm 1,5 mm circs
- size 11 steel crochet hook
- size 30 crochet cotton

- on the cover of Lavori Artistici a Calza 11. For 98 cm Diameter, suggested; thread, Cordonnet? 30; needles, 2.0 mm circulars; hook 1.0 mm.

- also in Neue Mode 5207 (Special Edition Program 1987. 5207/01, pg 3, oop - eBay.) For 98-100 cm Diameter, suggested; thread, 200g Liana 20; needles, 50 cm and 100 cm 2,5 mm circulars; hook, 1,75 mm
- there are 10+ consecutive rows of mesh stitches that are very tedious to do.
- knitting/crocheting finished Fe 07; Fe 08 - 27 1/2" before blocking, potato starched
- no binding in this pattern - the opposite occurs where the stitch counts increase/decrease rapidly in subsequent rows of the floral designs ie puckering.

... what I learned ...
- how not to knit into a YO when it's the last stitch in the round, [blue arrows,] makes for a messy extra strand in the resulting eyelet














- instead of kniting into the YO space, knit into the space from the row below the YO [green arrows,] ie knit under 2 strands instead of one.

FYI: you can buy a new copy of 'LAVORI ARTISTICI a CALZA 11,' (Lavori 11,) - in Italian - which has most of the same patterns as a used copy of Neue Mode, 5207 - in German.
[edit:] Apr 8/08, The cover design on Lavori 11 is not in Neue Mode 5207.
Lavori 11 has more patterns - 66 patterns while Neue Mode - 5207 has 54. From what I can tell there are 5 lace insertion patterns in the German magazine that are not in Lavori 11. They even have the same photos, just different page layouts, reverse image, etc.
NB: The lace pattern that I made last March from Lena 09/06 is also in Lavori 11! Also, I think I've seen this pattern on the cover of Neue Mode - 5601.

Burda 418 - purchased from an eBay vendor in Germany, (out of print)

• was on Rnd 169, but frogged back 46 rounds to fix a big boo-boo.

• Dec 5 - 200 Rnds and crochet edging done, steel crochet hook sz 12, ~ 34" unblocked.

• Dec 15 - blocked. Changes include adding width, reducing width, as well as lengthening along the diagonals to minimize binding.

This center is very similar to, if not the same as his Lyra pattern, (also oop and one that I would love to make but the pattern costs too much - up to US$71 on eBay.)
In the magazine's photo I noticed binding along the diagonals leading to the corners - trying to 'fit a round peg in a square hole?' (will try to alter the pattern and/or switch to larger circulars.)

After 2 lace projects since Mother's Day 2004, my Addi lace circular now has a dull spot. I don't know if Brasso will shine it up or not.
